We’re Making Masks

We’re Making Masks

We’re mobilizing our Rent the Runway operations to create non-medical face masks for the general public. Our small but mighty in-house team — with support from other local factories in New York — will produce these masks, enabling us to provide much-needed employment and support U.S. jobs during this time. Most important, the production of these masks will help ensure that medical-grade masks are prioritized for healthcare and other COVID-19 frontline workers.

Safety & Sustainability

Safety & Sustainability

We developed our protective masks with an eye towards fashion and sustainability, so they’re washable and reusable. Made from 100% cotton or cotton blend and lined in cotton/poly, the fabric we’re using has been salvaged as scraps from prior production runs or purchased as unused surplus from textile mills.

Supporting Our Community

Supporting Our Community

While we have masks you can purchase for yourself here (5 for $30) — you can also help us support communities in need by donating a pack. For each 5-pack sold (5 for $50), RTR will give a 5-pack to a community in need through our partnership with Project Renewal, a New York-based nonprofit organization founded to end the cycle of homelessness by empowering individuals and families to renew their lives with health, homes, and jobs. RTR masks will be distributed to Project Renewal’s extensive network of shelters and transitional housing programs across the five boroughs.

No, these are not medical grade masks. The RTR masks were developed to help satisfy the CDC recommendation that the public wear non-medical grade, protective cloth face coverings in public settings where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. Medical-grade equipment, including surgical masks or N-95 respirators, are critical supplies that should be reserved for first responders, so we’re doing our part to ensure that this equipment stays in the hands of those who need it most. Yes — this effort began several weeks ago when we decided to produce masks in our fulfillment centers specifically for our employee populations. We then recognized that there was a larger need to serve others who are in need of protective masks during this time.
