The Real Sustainable
Fashion Movement

The retail industry is the second largest
polluter in the world (Oil is the first).
Let’s change the way we get dressed,
one rental at a time. Mother Earth will
thank us – learn more below about
how to rent, reduce, and reuse.

in the world (Oil is the first).
Let’s change the way we get dressed. Mother Earth will thank us – learn more below about how to rent, reduce, and reuse.
  • Rent

Every time you rent, you are
    participating in the shared clothing
economy. We hope this helps reduce
    the amount of clothing that
ends up at the back of our
    members’ closets and in landfills.
  • Reduce

    The average woman throws away
about 82 pounds of clothing per year.
Renting things you’d only wear a
few times is a more sustainable answer
    because more people sharing clothing
    means less clothing waste.
  • Reuse

Once our garments are no longer suitable
for rent, we do our best to extend the lifecycle
of our garments further. For example,
we offer them for sale through Sample Sales
or donate them to carefully-selected organizations
like Dress for Success and Operation Prom.
  • The RTR Garment Bag

We always knew there had to be a less wasteful way to package clothing. Enter our patented reusable garment bag (goodbye plastic mailing bags, cardboard, and vinyl packaging!), that protects your rentals from the elements, ensuring they arrive in clean, pristine condition. Our garment bags, which are used and reused, are thoroughly dry cleaned after every use.

  • Revive by Rent the Runway

Revive is our new name for our growing program that extends the life of garments. When styles are no longer able to cycle through the Unlimited Closet, we make them available for purchase via our Sample Sales and select partners like thredUP, or donate them to vetted nonprofit organizations including Dress for Success and FabScrap.

  • Squeaky Clean—Every Time

Our conscientious cleaning processes, focused on both wet- and dry-cleaning, use biodegradable detergents that are free from added fragrances and zeolites. We do not use (and never have used) any halogenated cleaning solutions such as toxic Perchloroethylene (PERC). After going through our rigorous cleaning processes, pieces pass through a steam tunnel between 248°F and 302°F and are immediately sealed in plastic to protect them from any additional handling.

  • Partners in Plastic Recycling

We use plastic polybags to protect and preserve our garments. We send our used plastic polybags to our partners at Trex who, in turn, recycles them into wood-alternative building and decking materials. Since our partnership began in 2017, together we've recycled over 365 tons of plastic (and counting)!

  • Smart Buying

We offer high-quality garments that are meant to last multiple seasons. By offering garments made from materials that are intended to last, our community is able to get more use out of a single piece of clothing, reducing the need to produce or use unnecessary garments.

  • Faux Fur Only

We took a stance. Starting in the Fall 2017 season, we made the decision to move away from carrying real fur and have phased it out completely.
