The Tokyo-born designer and ADEAM founder, Hanako Maeda is known for creating collections that infuse art and wearability. After graduating from Columbia University with a degree in anthropology and art history, Maeda moved back to Tokyo and launched her brand in 2012.
The name ADEAM comes from the designer’s last name (Maeda spelt backwards!) and represents the fusion of East and West, traditional and modern, and avant-garde with wearable. We visited Maeda in her NYC studio to get the inside scoop on the 2019 Pre-Fall collection, her design process, and her day-to-day routine.
Tell us about ADEAM and how it all began. What got you started?
My family has been in the fashion industry in Japan for more than 35 years, and I grew up in the business. My mother is a fashion designer, so I went with her to fittings or visits to factories in both Japan and Europe. I’ve always been surrounded by fashion.
Let’s talk about your current collection on RTR. What was the inspiration behind it?
My collections are always inspired by traditional Japanese culture. Pre-Fall ’19 is my first Pre-Fall collection, so I wanted to focus on Japanese craftsmanship and the signature silhouettes ADEAM has become known for. The upcoming Fall ’19 collection is specifically inspired by the Ainu culture of Hokkaido and its focus on prints and colors drawn from nature.

What’s the must-rent piece of the Pre-Fall 2019 collection?
I love the Moga Slip Dress from Pre-Fall 19 because the fabric is water-resistant and its a perfect beach to dinner summer dress. From the upcoming Fall ’19 collection, the Asymmetric Long Sleeve Ruffle Dress perfectly captures ADEAM’s feminine yet quirky aesthetic.

I’m a Japanese designer based in both Tokyo and New York, splitting my time between both cities.
What’s your typical morning routine like?
When I wake up, I love to make myself sencha (green tea).
What’s your go-to work outfit?
The ADEAM Japanese crepe pants have become my uniform because they’re wrinkle-free and I can wash it at home, so it’s super easy to take care of.

Any current reads, podcasts, or shows that are inspiring you?
I’m a big fan of Japanese writer Haruki Murakami, so I’ve been reading over his works.

I love finding fun new restaurants and visiting them with friends.
